The Shy Reserve – Both

The fog is rolling in
The vapour trails within
The mist is humming tunes
The brume is singing
The moon and sun agree
The fall eyes wintering
The springing summer sees
The brume is clearing

Follow the rainbows through sunlight and mist
Bask in gladness with colorful kisses
Follow the rainbows through sunsets and mist
Bask in the gladness with twilight’s kiss

The edge of seventeen
Misunderstandings seen
Gramarye stays to sing
Surrender starlight
To here knows when to see
So many melodies
Time of the season rings
White satin tonight

Follow the rainbows through sunlight and mist
Bask in gladness with colorful kisses
Follow the rainbows through sunsets and mist
Bask in the gladness with twilight’s kiss

The fog is rolling in
The vapour trails within
The mist is humming tunes
The wind is singing too
The moon and sun agree
The brume is clearing

Extra guitars by Peter Sawtell

This is the opening track on the second album by The Shy Reserve (Both), and also the first video made for YouTube that begins the eight-video series. My old bandmate from Creeping Myrtle and The Pagan States, Peter Sawtell, made a cameo. This made it the first time that he and I (Randal) played guitar together on the same song since 2009 (I think). I’m pretty proud of the way the track turned out. I suspect that I tried harder to get everything just right since Pete played on it and I wanted the end result to shine extra bright.

The verses are in a minor key and are a bit melancholic, fully embracing the shoegaze ethos. The lyrics convey a fog that could be literal or figurative. The choruses switch to the parallel major key, shifting to a more uplifting feeling, lyrically signaling that the gloomy fog can turn into a rainbow if the listener allows it to.

There are song titles sprinkled in the lyrics from many past influences, for the Easter egg hunters among you. There could be even more than I realize. The ones I was conscious of when I wrote the song are by Ride, Stevie Nicks, Remy Zero, My Bloody Valentine, The Zombies, and The Moody Blues, in that order.
