The Shy Reserve – Azuline

What do I fear first and crave most
Why do I tether this brave ghost
When should I look with trust
Where should I learn with lust

Please don’t look my way
So there can’t be dismay
Don’t stare at me
So you can see my spirit flee

We smile with our eyes
This contact leaves me high

Please don’t look my way
So there can’t be dismay
Don’t stare at me
So you can see my spirit flee

When should I look with trust
Where should I learn with lust

You know that feeling you get where you are looking away and you feel someone’s eyes on you, but knowing that if you looked back at them they’d quickly look away? I wanted to write a song about that feeling and so I did. Human connection is a tricky thing in the post-pandemic era. Some of us weren’t that great on that topic to begin with. I wanted to connect musically with types who were built like that. This is my feeble attempt to do that, anyway.

This is one of two tunes on the album that didn’t have any guitar at all. The other one is Lower Lash Line. I intended to have guitar on all of them since this was supposed to be my big ‘guitar’ album after so many albums of not being able to play. But, I simply found that these two songs worked best centered on keys and piano.
