The Shy Reserve – Azuline

Time flies and drags
Sun beams and lags
Moon rays and sags
Time flies and drags

When loss is laden
And dreams have faded
We’re past ecstasy
While clocks are ticking
And tears are dripping
The slow urgency

Time flies and drags
Fun shines, gloom lags
Love runs, hate sags
Time flies and drags

When loss is laden
And dreams have faded
We’re past ecstasy
While clocks are ticking
And tears are dripping
The slow urgency

Time flies and drags
Time flies and drags

This is not only my favorite song on the album, but it’s currently my favorite one that I’ve ever written and recorded. I’m more proud of this than any of them. I hope that I’ll get to say this again about some new tune I’ve yet to write in the future. But, for now, this is ‘the one’ for me.

It’s the third song I wrote the music for on Azuline, after Porcelain and Lower Lash Line. I was stuck on it for a year and a half. Each time I’d write and record a new keyboard part for it, I seemed to get further away from the finish line instead of closer. After not being able to play guitar for close to fifteen years, I decided to visit a guitar shop and just try playing for a few minutes just to see how it would feel. Well, I fell in love with an emerald green Guild Starfire and took it home with me. I call him Golders Green after the Pete Ham album of the same name.

In true Shoegaze fashion, I wrote and recorded some guitar tracks that were dripping with gooey goodness with some pedals that I’ll keep secret. The song fell into place almost instantly, and I got goosebumps and chills and couldn’t stop grinning like a big ol’ goofus. Instead of finishing the writing with lyrics and melody, I decided to just keep going and wrote/recorded the music for the other seven songs on the album. Only then did I go back and finish with lyrics/vocals. Once I did add the vocals, I knew right away that this would be my favorite.

As of this writing, the album has yet to come out. So, I have no idea what anyone else will think of this, or any of the other songs. Even if nobody else likes it, I’ll still consider it a success because it got me back into being a guitarist who writes Shoegaze tunes, just like when I wrote my very first officially released ditties for Creeping Myrtle a million yonks ago.
