When nothing never occurs
It’s always sometimes something
A zero sum game with Venus in furs
It’s never always nothing
You’ve been like January since June
It’s twenty-five or six past two
We’ve been ice breaking fire with spoons
It’s sixty-nine percent past due
North of yesterday
South of tomorrow
West is the cost you pay
East we can borrow
When nothing never occurs
It’s always sometimes
A hero gone lame with poodles and purrs
It’s never always

It was fun to write with a very literal double meaning built right into the title. It freed me up to write lyrics that were nonsensical in nature and just simple fun instead of being too serious about things. I’ve always been drawn to songs like I Am The Walrus where the words are just psychedelic poetry instead of being forced to be taken at face value.
One of my all-time favorite songs is 25 or 6 to 4, mostly because Terry Kath was one of the must underrated guitarists in history and finally had a place to shine instead of hiding behind a horn section. He didn’t write the song (Robert Lamm did), but he’s the one who made it soar for my ears and imagination. There is a lyrical nod to that song in my lyrics, which should be pretty easy to spot.
I used a Mellotron keyboard on this, something I’ve used many times in the past. I’ve always liked the flute setting the best because it reminds me of the intro to Strawberry Fields Forever. I also liked playing the bass part on this one. The final mix was pretty tricky to nail down, but I’m pretty satisfied with it.
