Rumors you hear, repeat
Logic you breathe, sanely
Fables you feel, free me
A myth you see, maybe
Are you a monster
A fillyloo or gowrow
Definitely, probably
Certainly, maybe
Are you a monster
A fillyloo or gowrow
Definitely, probably
Certainly, maybe
Maybe you’re an uproar
A noisy exclamation
Some peasant speech
To drive a feller mad

I’ve always enjoyed old timey words and phrases that are used so infrequently today that most people simply won’t know what it’s all about. Fillyloo is one of those words for me. When I write songs, especially these days, I almost always start with a title and build the song around that title. This was no exception. There are two accepted definitions of the word, and I wanted my tune to reflect both of them. It could be a mythical monster, and it could be a loud ruckus from back when folks didn’t ‘talk too good.’ I found amusement and creativity from both angles.
Musically, I enjoyed pretending to be a cross between Stevie Wonder and John Paul Jones and doing my best on the Hohner Clavinet. I’ve used this keyboard on previous songs, most notably Half Century Boy from Solo Seasons. But, this was the first tune I used it on for The Shy Reserve. It’s also the first one where I played (Shoegaze) guitar over the top of the keys (and bass and drums). I’m quite pleased with how everything turned out with this ditty.
